Thursday Treks – Our Own Backyard
There is no light way to say this – we have had some hellish weeks lately. My mom came to live with us and promptly ended up in the hospital with a fractured pelvis. She then went to a rehab facility for 2 weeks. During this time, my father became gravely ill and passed away. I feel like a ping-pong ball, just bouncing around from one situation to another. We still have the funeral to go to this weekend.
Despite worrying about the kids and the fact that I feel like they are not having a very good summer, they seem to be dealing with everything really well.
Today we got a chance to get away from things. Although we didn’t go far physically, a short walk in our own backyard did a lot for us emotionally.
We hiked down through the pasture into the woods and to the brook that runs through our property. I suspected that the blackberries would be ripe and brought along a bowl. Boy was I right!
The kids loved picking them and I think we have enough for a pie, even after filling our bellies!
When we got to the brook, the water was cool and clear so we waded up and down the brook for a while. In one spot there is a huge, moss-covered, granite boulder and we saw this guy sitting on it:
He looked much bigger in person – those legs were about 2 inches long. Does anyone know what kind of spider this is? I impressed the kids with how close I got to take the picture – but I would kind of like to know if I put my life in danger!
When we were done, we hiked back up the hill. Number 1 told me he had a great time and was so glad we bought this land. So am I 🙂
