Smithsonian Space Museum
We are vacationing on a budget, but we are not letting that stop our fun!
Today we drove from New Jersey to Washington, DC. On the way we stopped at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, a satellite museum just next to Dulles International Airport.
We OK, Spouse, really wanted to stop at this museum because it has the space shuttle Discovery on display. It was an awesome site.
Numbers 2 and 3 are huge space fans, but we were all impressed by the 2 hangars full of planes, satellites and rockets. The kids’ excitement was contagious as they marveled at everything.
I also learned that Number 1 had watched a video of the space shuttle Challenger exploding in his science class. It’s something he never told me before and is a tragedy I remember well myself. I was home sick from school and was excited to watch New Hampshire’s very own Christa McAucliffe launch into space. It was hard to grasp what happened watching the space shuttle disintegrate on the television. Number 1 even remembered that it was due to an O-ring failure, something I’m not sure I even knew! It’s funny, I never know when he is going to open up and start talking to me.
Sometimes you just need to some free time together.
