J. Jumping in to Track
We’re a soccer family. We’ve flirted with other sports for a season or two, but for the past 8 years at least one of my kids (most of the time multiple kids) have played soccer. Many years soccer is a 3 season sport!
Number 3 hasn’t found his sport calling yet. He’s tried baseball, flag football, soccer and lacrosse. This year he started jiu jitsu (hey look another J word!) and I think it’s going to stick, but he’s also yearning for something that will have him run around more.
So this spring he is going to try track (and field).
Why are we jumping into track?
Well, the simplest reason I signed Number 3 up for track is because he wanted to. The conversation went something like this:
Me: Hey, have you ever thought about track?
Number 3: Yes, I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do track.
Me: Really?! (insert a lot of surprise here) Why?
Number 3: Well, I’m a good runner and really fast, so it just makes sense.
It’s nice to know that he is so self-aware.
But I have other reasons for being interested in track. First, Number 3 has a lot of energy and he needs to burn it. Or should I say, I need him to burn it. Second, team sports haven’t worked out well for Number 3. He’s always a little anxious about how he is performing compared to other kids. I think track will be good for him because a lot of it is about improving on yourself. Third, the track and field program is supposed to be good in our town (at least that’s the rumor). Fourth, none of his siblings have tried it before, so it will give him something that is all his own. And fifth, in addition to sprinting and hurdles, he’s going to learn some J words like long jump and high jump (okay, I guess technically that’s only one word).
He has his reason and I have my many reasons, so we are all jumping in!
