Herpes – With You During Your Worst Times
Hello, my name is Rebecca Tirabassi and I have herpes. And I don’t mean it is hiding out in my body, I mean I am currently having an outbreak. I woke up this morning and I have a big old cold sore front and center on my top lip.
Herpesviruses are cowards really. They like to hide in your body and come out and give you a sucker punch when you are at your worst. If you have a cold and are already fighting off another bug, if you are tired from lack of sleep, stressed out from work, or it happens to be your time of the month, they will come out and multiply all over your mouth.
I guess I could look at it with a glass half full kind of attitude. Maybe these little guys just want to be with me during my hour of need. They know I am stressed and are coming out to show their support.
But I really don’t think that is what is going on. I think they sensed that my body isn’t at its peak anymore and they are coming out to jump on over to another healthier host.
It was worse when I was working in the lab and had to go to conferences to give talks. It was a stressful time – staying up late making slides for the talk, giving practice talks, traveling, all that sort of stuff. Often I would get a cold sore.
It was always so embarrassing – giving a talk about herpes while herpes was literally dancing across my lips. I always wondered if people were just staring at my mouth wondering if I inoculated myself in the lab, or if I was another Dr. Barry Marshall, the Australian doctor who experimented on himself to prove that a bacterium causes ulcers.
Luckily I don’t have to worry about that anymore. I don’t have to go out and see people today if I don’t want to, and I definitely don’t have to put myself on display in front of a crowd. I can just hunker down and spend some quality alone time with my life-long friends.
