Fabulous Frogs and Fine-Feathered Friends
The other day I was thinking about the things that make me smile at random. You know, the things that are so surprising and pleasant they just perk up your mood. Nature does it for me – A lady slipper found unexpectedly in the woods, a bush of berries I didn’t know was on our property, a praying mantis perching on our window.
Two days ago we had the return of one of my favorite spring and summer sounds: frogs! I love lying in bed with the window open listening to the sound of peepers (tree frogs). I have loved it since I was a little girl.
When I was a junior in college I went abroad to Germany. Spouse gave me a key ring with a button that played a sound like peepers when I pressed it. He was afraid I would be homesick without them. He knows me.
In our pasture there is a big hole (almost could be a small pond) that is full of water about 3/4 of the year. Since this is the first spring that we have been here, I didn’t realize that this hole is also the local breeding grounds for the frogs in the area.
This is what is going on out there most of the day right now:
Crazy isn’t it?
The other things that have made me smile recently are really surprising. I hate dislike am starting to like chickens!
I almost giggled when I saw these:
For some reason those slightly prehistoric-looking tracks tickle my fancy.
Our 2 oldest chickens are curious and social. They don’t like to be held or petted a lot, but whenever I am outside I feel a certain presence and they have popped up beside me. They come strolling along, keeping their distance, but they like to be near me.
The other day I left the barn door open when I was cleaning stalls and they came to keep me company.
Good thing I am starting to like them since Spouse has gone a little fowl crazy!
